Newcastle United are once again being linked with a January move for FC Groningen’s highly-rated Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk.
The 21-year old who plays at centre-back has enjoyed a successful few seasons at the Eredivisie outfit and the Magpies have been in touch with his agent in the past.
Interest has now been confirmed by FC Groningen director Hans Nijland, with a fee in the region of £2.5m being mentioned in the Dutch media today.
Van Dijk started his career at Willem II before moving to FC Groningen in 2010. He signed a contract extension in February to tie himself down until the summer of 2015.
Last season, he started to establish himself as a regular and played 22 games at the heart of Groningen’s defence.
