Newcastle are tracking Marseille’s Spanish right-back Cesar Azpilicueta, according to reports in Spain.
The 22-year old, former Athletic Bilbao full-back is a key target for Chelsea as the Blues look to replace Jose Bowsinga. However, according to La Provence newspaper, both Liverpool and Newcastle are planning to hold talks with Azpilicueta.
Toon are still in the market for Lille’s Mathieu Debuchy, and it looks like we’ll only move for Azpilicueta if the Debuchy move fails to materialise.
Azpilicueta is captain of Spain’s Olympics Football team and is rated highly in Ligue 1 after a number of commanding performances for Marseille. He will cost in the region of £8 million, should Alan Pardew decided to pinch him from under the noses of Chelsea.
Azpilicueta is contracted to the Stade Vélodrome side until the summer of 2014.
The Spaniard looks like a good player and might be a good alternative if the move for Debuchy fails. However, we’re pretty confident of a deal for Debuchy being completed in the coming week.
What do you think about Azpilicueta? Have you seen him play? How reliable do you think this rumour is from La Provence?
