Reports in the Dutch media today suggest than an unnamed Russian club has made a bid for reported Newcastle United target Douglas.
The Twente defender, seen in a rather angry mood in the video above, has long been Alan Pardew’s top defensive target – and the Magpies have held talks with the Eredivisie club about a possible move.
However, now there are reports in the Netherlands that a Russian club is looking to clinch a deal for the 24-year old Brazilian who has been left out of Twente’s Europa League qualifier tonight.
Toon remain confident of signing Douglas – but have put the move on hold because the player must remain in Holland until 24th August to qualify for Dutch International team selection.
Newcastle know any deal won’t go through until then, so have moved on to other targets for now. The latest approach from Russia means the player now has a choice between England and Russia.
In the past, Douglas has been linked with a move to Juventus and Wolfsburg. Last month he spoke about Newcastle’s interest, saying:
“Five clubs are interested and there’s a bigger club than Newcastle. I cannot still say anything about it, but I hope soon to have my new club.”
He has played over 130 games for FC Twente since moving to them from Joinville in 2007.
