Newcastle United are interested in Polish defender Sebastian Boenisch – according to reports in Germany.
Boenisch saw Poland eliminated at Group stages in Euro 2012
The versatile 25-year old played in all three of Poland’s Group A games at Euro 2012 and has reportedly caught the eye of Toon scouts.
The story in German newspaper Bild says that Boenisch’s proposed free transfer to Stuttgart has fallen through. The Gliwice-born defender has become a free agent this summer after spending five years at Werder Bremen.
Alan Pardew is looking to bolster his defence ahead of next season’s Europa League campaign. Right-back Danny Simpson faces an uncertain future at the club after he rejected a new deal. The magpies have had a bid for Lille’s Mathieu Debuchy rejected but talks are expected to continue now that France are out of Euro 2012.
Former Schalke full-back Boenisch plays on the left or right side of defence. He is 6ft 3in tall and played for Germany at U21 level before taking advantage of being eligible to play for Poland in the Euro championship.
He is engaged to former Miss Austria Tatjana Batinić.
