Glenn Roeder has praised the business decisions of Mike Ashley, claiming they are a significant factor in Newcastle’s impressive season.
The former Toon boss, who enjoyed five years as a player on Tyneside has been keeping a close eye on the magpies this season.
Newcastle have already secured Europa League football for next season, and are in the hunt for Champions League sitting in 5th, level on points with 4th placed Spurs.
Mike Ashley sold striker Andy Carroll to Liverpool for £35m and brought in the likes of Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse who have helped the Toon climb up the table.
Roeder, the last manager to guide NUFC to Europe though the Intertoto Cup thinks Ashley’s blueprint has been spot on.
He said:
“I think Mike Ashley has proved why he is so astute in business.”
“He has sold at the highest point and bought at value for money. He has found the highest prices possible for the players he has sold, and he has reinvested in others who have all proved to be bargains.”
Roeder also has positive words for Chris Hughton, who Newcastle fans will always hold in high regard for bringing them back up in to the Premier League.
Hughton has now secured a Championship play-off spot with Birmingham City.
Roeder added:
“Alan [Pardew] would be the first to admit that it was Chris Hughton who got them going again after they were relegated.”
“Hughton did extremely well to get them back up again at the first time of asking, which is very important.”
“Alan is doing a fantastic job at Newcastle and Chris Hughton is now doing brilliantly at Birmingham.”
Newcastle suffered a 4-0 defeat at Wigan on Saturday and travel to Stamford Bridge to face a confident Chelsea side tomorrow night.
The game is a 7.45pm kick off.
